The Handmaid's Tale
17:04:00
Never a dystropian future has seemed
as possible as this society where women have lost all their rights. The ones
they have been fighting for during the last two centuries. Long ago it was
believed that women came to this world with the only purpose of having
children. Fortunately, this conception has changed during the last years but,
what happens when a politic party that still thinks that takes control over the
society?
The answer is very simple: The
Republic of Gilead. A society controlled by men where women are tortured,
mutilated or murdered for what they consider offenses. Men have control over
women’s bodies so they are allowed to systematically rape them with the only
purpose of having a baby. Of course, it is not that simple because this politic
party is smart enough to disguise these atrocities under the appearance of
sacred ceremonies.
This being said, how can it be
possible that people are willing to watch such a terrifying show? Because this
fictional near future is anchored in a profound understanding of the darkest
side of human nature. Every law approved lately against women is one step
closer to Gilead. People like Trump, Le Pen, Bolsonaro and Äkesson prove that
this series is relevant, in this time. More than ever. This future has never
feel more real and this is why we found ourselves pausing the show to catch our
breath. We shouldn’t see The Handmaid’s Tale as an extreme feminist show
because feminism is subtle, it recognizes that some women can be bad too, and
some men will die to do the right thing. In a nutshell, this show is real.
If you think this is a warning tale
for the future, you should know it includes nothing that has not already
happened to women across the world. The Handmaid’s Tale is holding a mirror to
the horrors we have become immune to because, quoting the show: “Ignoring isn’t the same as ignorance, you
have to work at it”.
